Articles and Other Duplicate Content

I am pretty sure that Google defines duplicate content internally and not on the whole www, i.e. it hurts to have many pages that are identical on one site.

However, does it hurt to post articles found somewhere on ones own website?

I am asking because I have written many articles regarding chinese language schools and I now want to post them on my website (I have previously posted them elsewhere – such as ezinearticles.com amongst others) – but I don’t want to drag my website down. I dont really care about going higher, I don’t think they will accomplish that – but what I do care about is not falling down!

To use a Matt Cutts phrase – Am I stupid in the head? What do you think about the effect of content that exists elsewhere?
