How to “register” content as original?

I have been looking into the whole Google+ authorship thing by adding rel=author to posts, and that is something I need to look into further.

However, what is a business website supposed to do to protect its content?
If we have 100% original content, is there any way to "register" it so that the search engines know that our site is the origin of this particular content?

I can’t stop a scraping from copying our original content, but if there were someway to convey to the search engines that this content originated from our website, then it would discount any other instances of that content found on other websites.
